The Reopening of a Legend: Teeth of the Dog Enters a New Era

At Casa de Campo Resort & Villas, a defining moment in Caribbean golf unfolded with the official reopening of Teeth of the Dog—a course that has shaped the global perception of golf in the Dominican Republic for more than five decades.

A Ceremony of National and International Significance

The reopening ceremony brought together an exceptional group of leaders, reaffirming the importance of this milestone not only for the resort but for the country’s tourism industry.

In attendance were:

  • The President of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader
  • Minister of Tourism, David Collado
  • Senior executives from Central Romana Corporation, led by President José “Pepe” Fanjul Jr.
  • Executive Vice Presidents Ramón Menéndez, Leo Matos García, and Eduardo Martínez-Lima
  • Casa de Campo President, Andrés Pichardo Rosemberg
  • International golf figures, media, and distinguished guests

The ceremony was marked by a formal blessing and concluded with the symbolic ribbon-cutting, officially reopening one of the most iconic courses in the world.

Restoring a Masterpiece

Originally designed in 1971 by legendary architect Pete Dye, Teeth of the Dog revolutionized golf course design by integrating the natural coastline into play.

After more than 50 years exposed to the Caribbean’s coastal elements, the course underwent its most comprehensive restoration to date. The project, led by Jerry Pate Design, focused on preserving the original design while incorporating modern engineering standards.

Key enhancements included:

  • Complete reconstruction of greens, bunkers, tees, and fairways
  • Upgraded drainage and irrigation systems
  • Replanting with Dynasty Paspalum, a turf suited for coastal resilience
  • Coastal protection of the iconic “Heaven 7” oceanfront holes

Leadership Vision and Commitment

During the ceremony, the President of Casa de Campo Resort & Villas, Andrés Pichardo Rosenberg, emphasized the long-term vision behind the restoration:
“Restoring Teeth of the Dog was a commitment to excellence and to preserving the legacy of Pete Dye for future generations.” Similarly, José “Pepe” Fanjul Jr., President of Central Romana Corporation, highlighted the broader impact: “This investment reflects our commitment to the development of La Romana and to strengthening the Dominican Republic’s position as a global tourism destination.”

A Strong Outlook for the Future

The reopening also served as a platform to announce new developments that will further elevate the guest experience at Casa de Campo Resort & Villas. Beginning in May 2026, the resort will launch the second phase of the Premier Suites project, including:

  • A new luxury pool
  • An expanded spa experience

These enhancements build on the resort’s recent recognition as a Forbes Four-Star property, reinforcing its leadership in luxury hospitality.

A Legacy That Endures
Consistently ranked among the world’s best by leading publications such as Golf Digest and GOLF Magazine, Teeth of the Dog remains a benchmark in golf course design and destination appeal. From the legendary “Heaven 7” to the symbolic resting place of Pete Dye at the iconic 8th hole, the course continues to offer an experience that is both timeless and unmatched.
