Why Minitas Beach Is One of the Only Seaweed-Free Beaches in the Caribbean
The arrival of sargassum in the Caribbean is a problem that causes significant ecological and economic losses. Between May and September, a large mass of seaweed invades the region’s coasts and beaches, affecting both marine fauna and local tourism. Fortunately, the coasts and beaches at Casa de Campo Resort & Villas remain sargassum-free due to the following factors:

Ocean and wind currents
“The Great Sargassum Belt is located in the Atlantic Ocean and tends to travel westward, so eastward-facing coasts and beaches are most affected by the phenomenon. La Romana province is located in the south of the Dominican Republic, so it is not directly affected by these currents.

Geographical protection
La Romana is protected by natural barriers such as islands and reef systems that naturally deflect sargassum. Casa de Campo, specifically, is sheltered in an area where the submarine slope and coastal shelf are steeper and deeper, reducing the likelihood of seaweed reaching the shore and accumulating.

Environmental management
In the unlikely event that sargassum reaches our beaches, our environmental management team is trained to maintain cleanliness. Minitas Beach has the international Blue Flag certification, ensuring that we maintain superior service year-round.
On your next summer vacation in Casa de Campo, you can count on Playa Minitas and its surrounding areas being sargassum-free.
